Name the assumptions
A scenario asks what would happen if an assumption were true. A forecast claims something about what is expected to happen. This worksheet does only the first: you supply a starting amount and three total percentage changes over the same chosen period. The page does not estimate returns, read your portfolio or tell you which investment to make.
Give the downside equal space
Use lower, central and higher cases to explore a range, including a meaningful loss case. Central does not mean most likely, and higher does not mean guaranteed upside. Even this range can miss a worse outcome. Stocks can lose value, so consider whether the amount and timing of a potential loss would matter to you before treating any investment illustration as useful.
Read the arithmetic literally
For a purely hypothetical starting amount of $1,000, a total change of minus 20% produces $800, no change produces $1,000 and plus 20% produces $1,200. Those results come from multiplying the starting amount by one plus the assumed change. They are examples of arithmetic, not historical results, recommended assumptions or expected investment performance.
Know what the worksheet leaves out
Fees, taxes, inflation, dividends and cash movements can change real outcomes; none is included in this basic calculation. A smooth end value also conceals the path taken to get there. Record why you selected each assumption and what evidence might change it. If you need a decision tailored to your finances, this generic worksheet cannot supply that personal assessment.
