Begin with the contract
Prediction markets concern specified future events. The CFTC explains that event contracts often involve yes-or-no outcomes with defined settlement terms. The precise wording determines what counts as an outcome. This page explains the idea without inviting participation.
A price is not certainty
A contract price reflects participants' assessments, not certainty or an independently verified probability. A precise-looking number can still be wrong, and finding a buyer or seller can matter. Do not substitute a market price for the underlying facts of a news story.
Read beyond the headline
Review the resolution source, deadline, fees and obligations. Financial loss, settlement disputes and limited liquidity are material concerns. The CFTC advises checking registration and treating extravagant payoff claims cautiously. Regulation does not guarantee a favorable result or replace understanding the product.
