Understand the markets
Read the economy, company disclosures and market headlines with the source and the date in view.

Start with the question
A useful market check starts with a question, not a prediction: are you trying to understand borrowing costs, household prices, hiring or a company's business? Use the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis's FRED database to locate economic series, then inspect the original source, units, frequency and observation period. A national indicator gives context; it does not describe every Gretna household or business.
Read company results separately
For a public company, begin with its own filings. SEC EDGAR provides access to annual, quarterly and other disclosures. Record the reporting period and filing date, and separate reported results from management's outlook. A headline about stronger sales does not by itself tell you whether a share is attractively priced or suited to your circumstances.
Ask what could go wrong
Stocks can fall, including those of familiar companies, and a shareholder can lose invested money. Research should include debt, cash needs, competitive pressure and the risk of relying too heavily on one business or sector. Diversification can reduce concentration but cannot promise that a portfolio will avoid losses. Fees also reduce what an investor keeps.
Keep the timing visible
A release date, an observation date and the time you checked a page are different things. Record all three when relevant. When data are unavailable, leave the value blank and link to the source; a blank is more informative than a plausible-looking number without evidence. Use a watchlist to organize questions and the scenario worksheet to explore assumptions, not to manufacture a forecast.
