Virginia’s unemployment ceiling is now $478—but the claim date matters

What changed this summer

Virginia increased unemployment-insurance benefit amounts for new claims filed on or after July 5, 2026. The maximum weekly amount rose from $430 to $478, and the minimum rose from $112 to $160, according to the Virginia Employment Commission’s June 25 announcement.

The increase does not automatically rewrite claims begun before July 5. For a household dealing with a recent job loss, the practical question is which benefit schedule applies to the claim and what the worker’s earnings record supports.

The state’s maximum is a ceiling, not a flat payment to everyone who applies.

Read the wage statement closely

After an initial application, VEC sends a Statement of Wages and Potential Entitlement. It shows the potential weekly amount and potential duration based on covered earnings.

Read the employers and wages listed, and contact VEC about missing or incorrect information instead of assuming the calculation is final and unchangeable.

The agency explains that the regular base period generally uses the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the claim’s effective date. An alternate base period can apply when someone does not qualify under the regular one; applicants do not simply choose whichever period produces a preferred result.

Our practical advice is to keep separation documents, employer names, pay records and VEC correspondence in one folder. A short timeline of your employment can make a question about a missing employer easier to explain.

Keep originals or copies available even when you have already uploaded information.

There is work to do after applying

VEC’s unemployment roadmap includes registering for work, searching for employment and filing weekly certifications. The agency says a claim should be filed in the week unemployment begins and cannot be backdated.

Its official website is the starting point for the application and current instructions.

If you take temporary, part-time or gig work, review the weekly reporting questions carefully. VEC requires gross earnings to be reported for the week earned rather than the week paid.

A payment delay or a smaller benefit should be checked against the agency’s explanation before drawing a conclusion.

On Labor Day, VEC’s online services remain available even though state offices are closed. For a problem that needs a person, use the official contact information and keep any stated response deadline in view.
