Before Gretna Had Its Name, It Had a Junction

At a glance

  • A freight ramp connects Gretna’s early commerce to its rail setting.
  • Chatham’s depot served businesses, students and military travelers.
  • Danville’s station preserves a history of rebuilding and reuse.

From the opening of this feature

One of the most revealing details in Gretna’s history is a wooden ramp. The town’s historic-district nomination describes a ramp running from the second floor of the Creasy storehouse to the railroad behind it.

The brick storehouse dates to 1881. That connection between a building and a track offers a practical way into the town’s story: goods had to move between the railway and the people who would store, sell or use them.

Commerce needed an actual doorway.

The names require care. The nomination places construction of the Lynchburg and Danville line through the area in 1872–1874.

The settlement became known as Franklin Junction; an Elba post office followed in 1879. The town incorporated as Elba in 1901 and adopted Gretna in 1916.

Those dates describe different administrative changes, rather than three names simply replacing one another overnight.
