Pittsylvania’s records portal works better when the request names a record—not a question

What the portal does

Pittsylvania County's NextRequest portal accepts public-record requests, tracks their status and can publish frequently requested records. The county warns that some records belong to another office—for example, birth certificates through Virginia Vital Records or deeds through the Circuit Court Clerk.

The portal's FAQ says the county generally must provide records or one of the legally permitted written responses within five working days. That can include notice that more time is practically necessary; five days is not a promise that every large request will be completed by then.

Write a request staff can search

Ask for an identifiable existing record: a contract, invoice, email set, inspection report, permit file or meeting record. Include a department, subject and date range.

FOIA does not require the county to answer research questions or create a new report that does not exist.
