The feed quote is not the grain price

Start with the direction of the transaction

A grain bid answers what a buyer is offering for specified grain under stated conditions. A retail feed quote answers what a seller will charge for a particular product.

They sit on different sides of different transactions. Placing the numbers together without that explanation can make a store appear expensive for reasons the comparison never measures.

The USDA and VDACS Virginia Daily Grain Bids report dated September 18, 2026 lists bulk commodities by region, grade, delivery terms and price unit. It is market context, not the verified price of a named bagged feed at a Gretna retailer.

It cannot establish stock today.

Name the item before dividing the price

A useful request begins with the exact product name, bag weight or bulk quantity, purchase date and pickup or delivery arrangement. If comparing substitutes, first establish with an appropriate agricultural adviser whether the products meet the same need.

A cheaper bag is not automatically an interchangeable ration. This article compares purchasing terms, not animal nutrition.

In a hypothetical comparison, one 40-pound bag costs $16 and one 50-pound bag costs $19: 40 cents versus 38 cents per pound. That difference describes package pricing only.

It does not compare ingredients, suitability, condition, storage life or services. Record those distinctions beside the calculation rather than hiding them inside a savings figure.

Bring freight into the same calculation

Suppose otherwise comparable offers cover 500 pounds. One totals $190 for pickup; another totals $200 delivered.

The delivered offer costs $10 more on the invoice. Whether it costs more overall depends on the pickup trip and the buyer's circumstances.

Do not automatically add an entire journey's expense to an errand already planned.

Ask whether delivery includes unloading and whether access affects the fee. Record minimum quantities and quote expiration.

If a supplier cannot commit until stock arrives, preserve that uncertainty: a possible delivery date is different from a confirmed one. A copied price without its terms is incomplete.

Keep hay comparisons separate

The September 16, 2026 Rushville Hay Auction report distinguishes hay by type, quality and bale form, and states that prices are on an FOB basis unless noted otherwise. It is an observation from that market, not a delivered Pittsylvania offer.

A price per bale is especially incomplete when weight has not been established.

For hypothetical bales of equal relevant quality, $60 for 600 pounds and $75 for 900 pounds produce weight-based costs of 10 cents and approximately 8.3 cents per pound. Actual weight and condition must be checked.

A mathematical conversion cannot supply missing measurements or establish feed suitability.

Save a quote that can be checked

Keep the supplier, product, quantity, unit, location, freight terms, date and expiration together. Label an unconfirmed telephone estimate as an estimate.

Label a government report as a benchmark. When local prices have not been verified, say so instead of turning regional information into a fictional local average.

Photograph or retain the product label with permission when it helps identify what was quoted. If a discount depends on buying several bags, record the total outlay as well as the discounted unit price.

A lower unit cost does not by itself justify purchasing more than can be appropriately stored and used.

Keep discounts and payment terms separate from product comparisons. A cash discount, an introductory promotion or a loyalty benefit may not be available to every buyer or on a later purchase.

Note the conditions and the undiscounted amount when supplied. That prevents a one-time offer from being mistaken for a durable change in the underlying market, and makes the saved comparison useful after the promotion expires.

The goal is a comparison someone could repeat tomorrow and understand: the same need, a defined quantity, a stated place, and the complete cost of obtaining it.
