Herman Moore’s next honor puts Danville in the 2026 college-football spotlight

Herman Moore’s 2026 College Football Hall of Fame selection gives Danville a new reason to revisit a remarkable receiving career. It also requires careful language.

The National Football Foundation announced the class on January 14. Its official induction ceremony is scheduled for December 8, 2026, in Las Vegas.

As of this article’s September 19 review, Moore is a selected member of the class with the formal ceremony still in the future.

The Foundation’s player profile identifies George Washington High School in Danville as Moore’s high school and lists his Virginia playing years as 1988 through 1990. His recognition concerns that collegiate career.

It should not be confused with election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a separate institution evaluating professional football.

The Virginia season and the Detroit record

At Virginia, Moore became a consensus All-American in 1990 and finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting. The Foundation connects him with the Cavaliers’ shared 1989 ACC title and their rise to the top of the national rankings during 1990.

It records 1,190 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns for his final college season. These are dated achievements, not a claim that every mark still leads the university record book.

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame’s career account supplies the professional chapter. Moore reached four consecutive Pro Bowls from the 1994 through 1997 seasons.

His 123 receptions in 1995 set the NFL single-season record at the time. Calling that number a historical league record preserves its importance; presenting it as today’s NFL record would be wrong.

The two stages explain why a receiving career needs more than one number. College production reflects one schedule and competitive setting.

Professional production reflects another. A career total, a single-season total and a per-game average answer different questions.

None should be silently substituted for another to make a hometown athlete appear first in a category the source never named.
