The game that completed the climb

Gretna’s first state football championship ended with a 48–18 victory over Monticello in 2003. WSET’s retrospective preserves several of the performances behind that score: Rico Reynolds ran for four touchdowns, including three before halftime, while quarterback Vic Hall produced more than 300 combined passing and rushing yards.

The semifinal had required a different kind of victory. Playing at Graham in muddy conditions, Gretna won 34–22 to reach its first championship final.

WSET’s archived account identifies linebacker Horace Hubbard among the players whose contemporary interviews captured the team’s determination. Rob Senseney was the head coach, following the rebuilding work of Robert Prunty.

Remember the team around the milestone

The championship was more than a quarterback’s highlight reel. Reynolds’ scoring, Hubbard’s place in the defense and the coaching transition give the story several human starting points.

Keeping those names together helps later generations understand how a school’s defining achievement was shared across different roles.

The Virginia General Assembly’s subsequent commendation of the 2004 team confirms that Gretna’s repeat followed a perfect 2003 championship season. That official record and the broadcast archive complement one another: one preserves the milestone, while the other brings individual contributions back into view.
