Looking and making can share a day

The Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke offers Art Venture as an interactive space for creative exploration. The museum’s official materials describe activities such as drawing, building and working with different forms of art.

For a family, that creates a useful balance between looking at finished work and trying an idea of its own.

General museum admission and Art Venture admission are separate questions. The museum advertises free general admission, while Art Venture has its own ticketing and selected community days.

Check the current arrangement rather than assuming that every experience is automatically free.

Choose a small creative challenge

Invite each person to find one detail in the museum that they would like to explore: a shape, a color combination or an unusual material. In a permitted making space, use that observation as a starting point without copying an artist’s work and presenting it as original.
