Early voting is open: make a plan before the November election

The voting period has begun

Early in-person voting for the November 3 election opened September 18, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. The statewide period runs through 5 p.m.

Saturday, October 31. For residents deciding when to vote, the useful next step is to choose a day and confirm the arrangements before making the trip.

The state election page lists October 23 as the deadline to register or update an existing registration. It also says people may register and vote using a provisional ballot in person after that date through Election Day.

Start with the right local office

Pittsylvania County lists its elections office at 18 Depot Street in Chatham and its telephone number as 434-432-7971. Its calendar confirms the same early-voting dates.

Residents of Danville should use their city registrar; the state’s local-office lookup provides a route to the appropriate contact.

When calling, ask for the voting entrance, hours on your intended date, and any arrangements you need to use the service comfortably. If someone is giving you a ride, share the confirmed details with that person.

A general office address is useful, but checking the particular day avoids building a plan around an assumption.

Keep the two October deadlines distinct

The state says applications for a ballot to be mailed must reach the local registrar by 5 p.m. October 23.

That is a request deadline. It should not be treated as an instruction about when a completed ballot must be returned; consult the official instructions supplied with the ballot for that separate step.

Put the action you intend to take beside each date in your calendar. “Check registration,” “request ballot” and “vote in person” are more useful reminders than a single entry marked “election deadline.”

Keep any confirmation with your election paperwork so you can refer to it if you have a question.

Check your own information

Use the official voter portal to review your details and the registrar to resolve anything unclear. Do not rely on a neighbor’s ballot or an old social-media graphic to identify your own choices.
