Gretna’s 2008 repeat belongs in the town’s football memory

A title between familiar landmarks

Gretna’s football story cannot stop at the unbeaten teams of 2003 and 2004, or jump directly from the 2007 defense to the 2011 championship. The Hawks won another Group A, Division 2 title in 2008.

Virginia’s General Assembly commemorated that team in Senate Joint Resolution 473 during its 2009 session, while the championship history published by the VHSL’s official bracket partner also identifies Gretna as the 2008 winner.

That placement matters. A repeat season brings a different question from a breakthrough: how does a program carry expectations forward when the previous year already set a high standard?

Give the season its own folder

An archive of 2008 should contain the roster, coaching staff, regular-season results and playoff path, with a source attached to each item. A newspaper clipping, school program and personal photograph each contribute something different.
