From microphone to podcast feed: build a show that can survive its second episode

Plan the repeatable episode

A local podcast does not need a complicated studio to begin, but it needs a process the host can repeat when the first burst of enthusiasm fades. Decide who records, who edits, who checks names and who publishes.

Start with a manageable episode length and a subject that can be explained clearly without requiring a new production method every week.

This desk review uses RØDE, Apple and Spotify documentation checked September 19, 2026. We have not tested microphone tone, app reliability or platform approval times.

The practical recommendations below are a proposed workflow for a small creator team, not results from a production trial.

Make one microphone path understandable

RØDE's PodMic USB illustrates a flexible connection choice: the manufacturer lists analog XLR and digital USB-C outputs, a headphone output with level control and onboard processing for the digital route. Those are connection and feature claims.

They do not establish how the microphone will sound with a particular voice, room or recording application.

For one host, a direct computer connection may simplify setup. For an interview with several people in one room, count every simultaneously recorded source and confirm the recording system supports them.

A microphone that can connect in two ways does not by itself supply a complete multi-person studio. Check the stand, cable, headphones and any required interface before ordering.

Make a short setup recording before the guest arrives. Say the episode name and date, speak at normal and emphatic levels, and listen back through headphones.

Leave enough time to move a noisy cable, quiet a device or change seats. Recording a preventable problem and hoping to repair everything later adds work to each episode.

A host, a feed and a listening app do different jobs

Apple's RSS requirements say a submitted feed needs required tags, artwork and at least one episode. The feed must be publicly addressable, and episode records need unique enclosure information and a stable identifier.

A hosting service can help satisfy these requirements, but an audio file sitting in a private folder is not equivalent to a distributed podcast feed.

Spotify says shows hosted with it are made available on Spotify automatically. Reaching services such as Apple Podcasts requires the creator to submit the show to those services separately.

Spotify also states that its video episodes appear as audio-only on other platforms through that distribution route. Plan a spoken explanation of anything essential that appears only on camera.

Keep a small release sheet listing the host account, feed address, episode title and each confirmed listening link. Record account ownership in a place the responsible team member can access securely.

A volunteer change should not leave a community show unable to update its own feed.

Finish the editorial work before publishing

Ask guests how to spell and pronounce their names, how they want to be introduced and which public contact route they want shared. Explain the recording and intended publication before beginning.

Keep the original recording alongside an edit copy, and maintain a note of cuts that materially change sequence or context.

Prepare a useful episode description: who is speaking, what the conversation covers, where cited information came from and how a listener can send a correction. Music should have a documented permission or license appropriate to the planned use.

A song available in a listening app is not, by itself, a production asset you can insert into every distributed episode.

Before release, check the beginning, a middle section and the ending of the uploaded file, then inspect the title and artwork on a listening device. Ask whether the audio-only listener can follow the story.

When the same modest checklist works for the second and third episode, the show has a stronger foundation than a launch built around equipment alone.
