A jury questionnaire starts a process: here is what comes next

Read the letter before planning a courthouse trip

A juror questionnaire in the mail asks you to help the court determine eligibility for a future pool of jurors. Pittsylvania County’s jury-service page says questionnaires go to a random sample of adults each year and must be submitted within 10 days.

Its accompanying FAQ makes clear that receiving one does not necessarily mean you will be summoned for jury duty.

The Pittsylvania Circuit Court Juror Portal offers an electronic way to answer a questionnaire received from the clerk. Follow the identifying instructions on your letter and use the official court portal.

Keep a record that you completed the response; if the process fails or the letter is unclear, contact the clerk through the county’s official directory.

A summons carries the reporting instructions

If you later receive a summons, read the dates and reporting procedure on that document. The Supreme Court of Virginia’s Answer Book for Jury Service explains that reporting does not guarantee selection to hear a trial.

A case may settle, or the selection process may leave some prospective jurors unseated.

The same guide directs people with a serious hardship to contact the number on their summons. The judge decides whether service can be deferred.

An employer’s busy period or a household calendar conflict is a reason to make the required inquiry promptly, rather than simply missing the date.

Separate court business from a threatening call

The county’s jury FAQ says police and court officials will not ask for payment, credit-card information or a Social Security number to resolve a failure to appear for jury duty. It advises reporting suspected scams to local law enforcement.

If a caller demands immediate payment, stop and independently contact the court through its published number. A familiar official’s name on a call is not the same as verification.

At the same time, keep responding to authentic court correspondence: the county warns that failing to complete a questionnaire or attend when summoned can lead to action by the judge.
