Zachary Taylor spent much of his public career in the U.S. Army, including service during the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. He won the presidency as the Whig candidate in 1848. In office, he confronted disputes over the status of slavery in newly acquired western territories. Taylor died in July 1850, and Vice President Millard Fillmore succeeded him before the Compromise of 1850 became law.
