A starting point in the record.

William Howard Taft worked as a judge and administrator before becoming the twenty-seventh president. His earlier roles included service in the Philippines and as secretary of war. His presidency coincided with divisions between conservative and progressive Republicans. After leaving office, Taft returned to legal work and became chief justice of the United States in 1921. He is the only person to have held both national offices.
