Ulysses S. Grant served as the Union Army's general in chief during the Civil War and accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. He later won election as the eighteenth president. His administration operated during Reconstruction and used federal authority in support of its enforcement. Grant served two presidential terms, from 1869 to 1877. After leaving public office, he wrote memoirs about his life and military service.
