Thomas Jefferson was the principal drafter of the Declaration of Independence and held diplomatic and cabinet posts before becoming president. He represented the United States in France, served as secretary of state under George Washington, and was vice president under John Adams. During his presidency, the United States acquired the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson held the presidency from 1801 to 1809 and later founded the University of Virginia.
