Ronald Reagan worked as a broadcaster and actor and led the Screen Actors Guild before becoming governor of California. He won the presidency in 1980 and again in 1984. His administration reduced federal tax rates, increased defense spending, and negotiated with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on nuclear arms. Reagan served from 1981 to 1989, during a period of changing relations between the United States and the Soviet Union.
