Richard Nixon represented California in the House and Senate and served as vice president under Dwight D. Eisenhower. He won the presidency in 1968 and was reelected in 1972. His administration opened diplomatic contacts with China, negotiated with the Soviet Union, and ended direct U.S. combat involvement in Vietnam. Facing the Watergate investigation, Nixon resigned in August 1974, and Gerald Ford succeeded him.
