Millard Fillmore became president when Zachary Taylor died in July 1850. He had previously practiced law, served in the House of Representatives, and held the vice presidency. His administration supported the Compromise of 1850, a package addressing territorial government, statehood, and slavery, including a stricter Fugitive Slave Act. Fillmore's presidency continued until March 1853, during a period of deepening disagreement between northern and southern states.
