John Tyler became president after William Henry Harrison died in April 1841, establishing an early precedent for presidential succession. Before his vice presidency, Tyler represented Virginia in the House and Senate and served as its governor. He disagreed with congressional Whig leaders over banking and other legislation. His administration also pursued the annexation of Texas. Tyler completed the presidential service period in March 1845.
