John Quincy Adams served as a diplomat, U.S. senator, and secretary of state before becoming the sixth president. As secretary of state, he worked on agreements involving Florida and the Oregon country and helped develop the Monroe Doctrine. After his presidency, he returned to public service in the House of Representatives. His career spanned several political parties and many years of congressional debate over slavery and national development.
