John F. Kennedy served in the Navy during World War II and represented Massachusetts in the House and Senate before winning the presidency. His administration established the Peace Corps, supported the space program, and confronted the Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy also proposed major civil rights legislation. He was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963, and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded him.
