John Adams served in the Continental Congress, worked as a diplomat in Europe, and helped negotiate the peace treaty ending the American Revolution. He became the first vice president under George Washington and then the second president. His administration faced conflict with France and disputes over federal authority. Adams served from 1797 to 1801, after a public career that began in Massachusetts law and politics.
