James Madison participated in the Constitutional Convention and wrote essays supporting ratification with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. He served in Congress and as secretary of state before becoming the fourth president. His administration governed during the War of 1812 against Britain. Madison's earlier work in the Virginia legislature and Continental Congress formed part of a public career centered on the design and operation of representative government.
