A starting point in the record.

James A. Garfield served in the Ohio Senate, the Union Army, and the U.S. House of Representatives before winning the presidency in 1880. His short administration confronted disputes over federal appointments and political patronage, including control of the New York Customs House. Garfield was shot in July 1881 and died in September. Vice President Chester A. Arthur then assumed the presidency.
