Harry S. Truman served in the Army during World War I and represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate before becoming vice president. He assumed the presidency after Franklin D. Roosevelt's death in April 1945. His administration oversaw the end of World War II, the use of atomic bombs against Japan, the Marshall Plan, and U.S. involvement in the Korean War. Truman remained in office until January 1953.
