Gerald Ford represented Michigan in Congress for twenty-five years and served as House minority leader. He became vice president through the Twenty-fifth Amendment's appointment process and succeeded Richard Nixon in August 1974. His administration addressed inflation, recession, and energy problems and participated in international negotiations. Ford pardoned Nixon for federal offenses. He served until January 1977, following his loss to Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election.
