A starting point in the record.

George Washington led the Continental Army during the American Revolution and presided over the Constitutional Convention before becoming the first U.S. president. His administration organized the new federal government and established practices for the executive office. Washington served two presidential terms, from 1789 to 1797, then returned to Mount Vernon. His earlier public service included work as a surveyor, military officer, and Virginia legislator.
