George W. Bush worked in business and served as governor of Texas before becoming the forty-third president. His administration responded to the September 11 attacks, launched military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and created the Department of Homeland Security. It also pursued tax and education legislation. Bush won reelection in 2004 and served until January 2009, when Barack Obama succeeded him as president.
