Franklin Pierce served in the New Hampshire legislature and in both chambers of Congress before becoming the fourteenth president. He also served as an officer in the Mexican-American War. His administration supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which reopened the issue of slavery's expansion in western territories. The resulting conflict helped reshape national party politics. Pierce served a single presidential term, from 1853 to 1857.
