Calvin Coolidge held local and state offices in Massachusetts, including the governorship, before becoming vice president. He assumed the presidency when Warren G. Harding died in 1923 and won election the next year. His administration emphasized tax reductions, limits on federal spending, and restraint in government intervention. Coolidge served until 1929 and declined to seek another term, leaving office before the stock market crash later that year.
