Andrew Johnson served Tennessee in Congress and later became vice president on the 1864 National Union ticket. He assumed the presidency after Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Johnson and congressional Republicans clashed over Reconstruction, citizenship, and the federal government's role in the former Confederate states. The House impeached him in 1868, and the Senate acquitted him. After his presidency, he briefly returned to the U.S. Senate.
