Abraham Lincoln practiced law in Illinois and served in state and national legislatures before becoming the sixteenth president. His administration led the Union during the Civil War. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and won reelection in 1864. He was shot at Ford's Theatre in April 1865 and died the next morning. His presidency ended as the war was approaching its conclusion.
