1. Which customers the alert names

   A drought warning affecting Chatham’s water supply also reaches county customers who receive water from the town. Pittsylvania County’s alert, posted September 11 at 1:10 p.m., identifies Dry Fork Road, Mill Creek Road, Robin Court and the U.S. 29 corridor between Tightsqueeze and Dry Fork.

   Customers in those service areas are being urged to conserve water as soon as possible.

   The county describes a Stage 2 Water Emergency — Drought Warning, citing inadequate rainfall, drought conditions through much of 2026 and falling levels at Cherrystone Lake and Roaring Fork Lake. The county says the warning remains in effect until the drought abates, lake levels rise enough, or a Stage 3 or Stage 4 declaration replaces it.

2. Read the dates and supplier together

   Chatham’s indexed announcement identifies September 9 as the declaration date. The county’s September 11 alert describes the warning as in place as of September 10.

   Both identify Stage 2; these different dates do not establish the sequence of any council action.

   County Public Works operates multiple systems and buys water from neighboring providers, including Chatham. A county customer can therefore be affected by a town’s supply conditions even when the county sends the bill.

   Check the named service areas and ask the utility about an uncertain address.

3. Conservation steps households can take

   EPA’s WaterSense guidance recommends turning off the faucet while brushing teeth, washing full laundry loads or selecting the appropriate load setting, and sweeping walks and driveways instead of washing them with a hose. These steps do not require buying new equipment.

   EPA also recommends finding and repairing leaks and reducing landscape watering during drought. Follow the local utility’s instructions so water remains available for critical needs.

   These are general suggestions; the current declaration and utility instructions establish applicable local requirements.

4. What this check establishes

   The county alert was readable during our September 12 check. Chatham’s full announcement and declaration downloads returned an access error; the town’s September 9 date was visible in its indexed primary-source announcement.

   We have not verified mandatory watering schedules, penalties or reservoir measurements.

   When sharing the alert with family or neighbors, include the supplier and service-area details. The source does not establish a new Gretna-system water order or a boil-water advisory.
